This last week has been hard for a lot of people. We want God to bless us with good things, positive feelings and joy in our hearts, and when we get the opposite we complain – loudly! Against that background I came across the following:
May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart.
May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace.
May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy.
May God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done.
Considering that, the hassles I have fade into insignificance. Have I been guilty of giving easy answers, half-truths and relating only superficially? Then maybe I need some discomfort to smarten me up! I have watched developments on the world stage with cool indifference, accepting that injustice, oppression and injustice are endemic and not even feeling any desire to work for change. I have not shed any tears with those who are suffering, and feel that there is nothing to do! Maybe God is trying to tell me that HE can make a difference and that he wants to work this miracle through me! You too can make a difference – but it starts with being prepared to accept a different set of “blessings”. Together we can change the world!
