This week I have talked to several people about the need to set boundaries and exercise better self care. As expected they then raised the question of whether I practice what I preach. I had to admit that I don’t always, but that I try – and any attempt is better than none! On that basis I would like to share some helpful hints of NOT what I do, but what are generally recognised as good suggestions:
- Have one day off every week! I struggle with this one but the designer’s directions are fairly clear, we need to stop working and have one day of rest every seven. On top of that we need to get enough sleep each night.
- Start each day with a time of meditation! Pause to consider what is really important, who am I and why am I here…rather than letting the urgent set the agenda. This is when I also pray and read the bible.
- Set aside time each day for your family! There is more to life than work, and if you don’t make time to listen to your partner and share in the concerns of your children they will give up on you. They need to know that you are interested.
- Have some fun every day! Do something just for you – even if others might think that it is a waste of time. for me that is wood turning, spinning wool and walking. What do you do for you?
- Invest in others! We all need friends but my business often squeezes them out. If you have no friends, something is seriously wrong with your lifestyle. Don’t complain about it, do something about it!
There are lots of other things I could say but hopefully that much is achievable! You are in control of your life – even if it doesn’t always feel that way. Make the choice today to change and start with these five things.
